How do you define a good neighborhood? Is it the nicely manicured lawns or the condition of the sidewalks? The truth is, that good neighbors are what make good neighborhoods. A community of caring and conscientious neighbors makes their communities more friendly, safe, and beautiful. In a recent study, Harvard professor and author Robert D. Putnam found, “Communities work better (students perform better, crime rates are lower, kids are safer, people live longer) when neighbors know one another better."
We all know that caring can be contagious, but so can home maintenance! Getting outside to do some yard work and rubbing elbows with the people who live around you can spark great conversations and can even be helpful when you need the name of a new contractor, plumber, or painter. Good neighborhoods have also shown to improve the quality of life for those within that community. When was the last time you shared a recipe or a power tool with a neighbor? Just think of the ripples a few simple acts of kindness could make.
If you are hoping to improve the atmosphere of your neighborhood, start today! Get outside, share something helpful, and start getting connected. Who knows, maybe even home values will increase!
And if you're looking to start fresh with some new roots, give me a call. I'd love to help you find a great neighborhood!
- Your neighbor, Melody
